The Fatherhood Gap

A Call for Fathers Who Secretly Doubt Their Own Skills

July 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Seven years into my fatherhood and I still am learning and growing.  Perhaps the best thing I can say is that I don’t think I am the only dad who knows he could be a better father and husband.

There are times when I feel like an absolutely incompetent dad.  There are other times when I am on top of the world.  I have come to accept the fact that fatherhood is not a goal or an objective, it is a lifelong learning process.

As I kick off this new blog, let’s be clear about my purpose in writing this.  First, it’s an opportunity for me to reflect on my role as father (and husband).  Second, it’s an opportunity for other fathers to see they’re not the only ones secretly questioning their abilities.  Third, it’s an opportunity for us to all grow and become better dads.

The more we can learn and grow with each other’s help, the more resilient our children and families will become.  Who’s with me?
